CAMPING TRIP
On Wednesday the 13th of September, we got our Junior Cert results. Before we saw them, we had to wait in the hall for an hour. Everyone was very anxious but after we got them we were all pleased with them and excited to go camping.
We arrived at the campsite at Lough Dan at around eleven o'clock and we were briefed on the rules of the campsite. Immediately after that, we started to set up our tents. Setting our tent up took longer than it should have as we didn't have enough pegs to hold up our tent, so we had to borrow some off other people.
After we set up our tent, we made our lunch. I brought Pot Noodles as all we had to do to cook them was boil some water, which wasn't hard. After lunch, we organised the inside of the tent and waited until around three o'clock, when most of the rain had passed, to go for the shorter of the two walks over the trip.
The first walk was around six kilometres: three kilometres to the rest stop andthree back to the campsite. The weather was all right at the start of the walk, but about 5 minutes into the walk, it started lashing rain.
After the walk, which took around three hours, I was cold, wet and not very happy. When we got back to the campsite, we dried off and made dinner. After we made dinner, we lit a campfire and stayed around it to keep warm as it got quite cold the later it got.
The next day, we had to walk seventeen kilometres to fulfill the requirements for the adventure trip part of Gaisce. The walk started at eleven so we had to make our own lunch before we left. The walk lasted for around five hours and left us with sore legs and feet and we were cold, wet and tired. After the walk we went for a swim in the ice-cold lake.
Then we made our dinner, built our fire and warmed up.
The next day we got up early to bin all our rubbish, organise our things and take down our tents. We left the campsite at around half ten and we arrived back at the school at twelve.
I think the camping trip was beneficial for me as it helped me be more responsible for my things and my rubbish as I had to sort it into different bins. The trip was also a good bonding trip for the year group as it made us work together to set up our tents, build the campfire and clean up the campsite. I enjoyed the camping trip and I would tell the next year group that goes to make the most of it.
